Throughout my career, I have developed course materials in various formats. I will use this page to showcase them.
A Flexible Format for Accessible Learning
The Digital Companion is a format I created to make learning accessible and organized for both students and teachers. Originally developed as an emergency response to the sudden transition from on-site to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has since been adapted for broader use. This format provides a seamless way to share curricula and learning materials through direct links, while enabling efficient organization of knowledge to meet learner needs and support quick teacher navigation.
The concept of the Digital Companion first emerged in the context of a classical undergraduate course on Medieval and Renaissance Philosophz. As universities shifted to distance learning mid-semester, the traditional format of 15 lectures and 15 seminars required significant rethinking. This course relied heavily on reading and interpreting classical philosophical texts, many of which were only available as printed copies in the now-inaccessible faculty library.
The transition presented three primary challenges:
Accessibility: Providing alternative resources for printed materials.
Ease of Use: Creating an intuitive system that minimized technical barriers for students.
Adaptability: Designing a format that could evolve with the course needs and support online lectures and seminars.
The solution was a website-based Digital Companion, serving as a central hub for course materials. This free, accessible manual allowed quick publication and easy navigation. Each page corresponded to a lecture or seminar, maintaining the course's structure while integrating digital resources. egrating new digital elements.
Multimodal Content: Video lectures, visual aids, quizzes, external links, and primary texts.
Ease of Navigation: Organized materials for quick access.
Accessibility: Provided digital alternatives to printed resources, ensuring all students had equal access to course materials.
Adaptability: Real-time updates, enabling lecturers to make adjustments and improvements as needed.
Self-Sufficiency: Does not require external administration or additional resources.
The Digital Companion was successful, meeting the immediate challenges posed by the pandemic while enhancing the learning experience. Students appreciated its intuitive structure and comprehensive content, praising it as a model for accessible and engaging online education.
Due to its effectiveness, this format was later adapted for other university courses, demonstrating its versatility as a tool for curriculum delivery and knowledge organization in diverse educational settings.
